Jim is an IT executive with extensive experience as a systems and applications development leader in retail, manufacturing and service-related industries. He has directed teams of technical and business unit representatives through full system life cycle projects including:
- Software development and maintenance
- Deployment initiatives as a result of mergers and acquisitions
- Customer relationship management and vendor management of outsourced resources
Jim’s expertise includes:
- All phases of the project life cycle: conception, feasibility, project initiation, gathering and analyzing requirements, project planning, managing change control, business process design and re-engineering
- Data warehousing and data analysis
- Working with technical teams to develop workflow needs
- Managing teams of developers and systems architects
- The “people” change management process
Jim most recently headed the IT department for a $500 million family dining restaurant concept. In the role of VP of Information Technology (effectively the CIO), he established an IT Steering Committee at the executive level to ensure that the senior executive team understood the technology portfolio and impact of technology to the business. During his time there, he worked to improve relationships with key vendors, moving them toward becoming business partners. Areas of accountability there included Point of Sale systems, help desk, infrastructure/networks, restaurant back office systems (both packaged applications and in-house developed custom software), and corporate systems supporting financials and HR.
Prior to this position, he led the mainframe and open systems development teams that support the merchandising, sales processing, inventory, and financial systems for a $1.8 billion, 700-store regional retailer. In his role as vice president of systems development, he worked closely with executive management in merchandising, advertising, distribution operations, store operations, pharmacy operations, finance and human resources to understand their business and system needs, assisted in the prioritization of requests, scheduling and monitoring new development, system enhancements, and system support. In this position he was responsible for a team of 15 full-time professionals and a budget of approximately $4 million.
Jim has also led the development team tasked with the enhancement, maintenance and support of the custom-developed primary order entry application for a $26 billion paper and forest products corporation. This mainframe-based application interfaced with distributed manufacturing execution systems and warehouse management systems in multiple locations through both EDI and internal networks. In this position, his teams consisted of up to 30 IT professionals supporting multiple businesses, and he had cost-center responsibility for budgets of more than $4 million.
Prior roles included leadership for a major express shipping/logistics services corporation as a systems development manager. Jim directed a staff of 16 members with responsibility for production support of several core business applications. Concurrently, he led new project development efforts in the areas of new customer welcome kits.
Prior to his role in the shipping/logistics area, Jim worked for one of the largest computer manufacturers in the country. His experience there encompassed both sales support and service delivery to many major clients in the educational, health care, and service related fields. Jim has an excellent feel for customer focus and building relationships, both internally and externally.
While Jim’s educational background is in business administration, his technical career has included technologies in mainframe, distributed systems, client-server and web applications.
